NYC, NY — Mayor Bill DeBlasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo often pretend that Trump is to blame for New York City’s transformation into a cesspool of crime in 2020. Of course, gun owners know that President Trump wasn’t calling the shots over Labor Day weekend, when another 28 people were shot, 5 fatally.
This brings the total number of shootings in New York City to right at 1,022 and counting for 2020. Compared to last year’s Labor Day weekend, shootings were up a staggering 37% over the weekend. August 30 to September 2, 2019 was the four day span of the holiday weekend in 2019 and only saw 16 shootings and 19 victims.
This weekend comes after one of the deadliest Augusts on record in NYC. Just the weekend of August 14 to 16 saw 39 shootings!
Year over year, things don’t look much better. So far, 2020 outpaces 2019 by around 73% as of the end of July. August isn’t likely to improve that number, at least not by much.
Can’t The Police Do Something?
In anticipation of the violence that always accompanies holiday weekends in these large Democrat-controlled cities, Police Chief of Department Terence Monahan said that NYPD would ramp up patrols for the duration of the weekend.
NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan addressed the “tidal wave of violence” seen across New York City this summer, announcing at a press conference Thursday that the department would provide extra officers in certain neighborhoods throughout the holiday weekend.
“We have to be concerned of the violence that we’re seeing right now. The gang violence, different crews have been attacking other crews,” Monahan said. “Make sure that the retaliation shootings that we’ve been seeing all summer don’t occur.”
