Des Moines, Iowa — With a growing number of embittered City Councils talking about passing radical gun control at the local level, gun owners scored a big win last night in Des Moines, IA.
At a recent council meeting, Councilmen Josh Mandelbaum didn’t hide his hatred for the Second Amendment or for gun owners who carry firearms for self-defense when he said:
“’The only reason someone has something like a high-capacity clip . . . is to do as much damage to as many people as quickly as possible. There is no reason for people to have high-capacity magazines,’ said Mandelbaum.”
Mandelbaum and fellow councilman Chris Coleman sponsored an ordinance that would make it a crime to possess a magazine that holds over 10 rounds of ammo, which would allow the anti-gun Des Moines Police Department to harass gun owners relentlessly.
But that didn’t sit too well with the members of Iowa Gun Owners, who turned out in force last night to make sure the council knew that there would be legal and electoral consequence to any attack on the Second Amendment.
IGO’s Chairman, Aaron Dorr, spoke before the council, calling their proposed ordinance ‘a disgrace’ and mocked the council for trying to get political revenge against gun owners, who have made large legislative strides in the ‘Hawkeye State’ in the last decade.
With gun owners outnumbering those who were in favor of the proposal by a 13 to 1 margin, the council balked and began to trip over themselves, as they hurried to apologize to gun owners for their proposed ordinance.
After the meeting was over, Councilwoman Linda Westergaard told Iowa Gun Owners that, “This entire thing was a waste of time, it was just grand-standing by one councilman.”
In a video response to the members of Iowa Gun Owners after the meeting was over, Dorr said:
“The Des Moines City Council, long enemies to gun owners and the Second Amendment, thought that they could safely attack the freedoms that so many great patriots in this state hold dear.
But Iowa Gun Owners members stopped them dead in their tracks, just like you’ve stopped every legislative attack on our freedoms at the state capitol for the last 11 years!
Every anti-gun mayor or council member in the state had better take notice, if we can stop the liberal Des Moines City Council, don’t think for a moment that we won’t stop you, too!”
